This opportunity is for an NPI Engineer to join a specialist electronics manufacturer in County Durham, England. The business develops RF and mmWave technology for demanding communications applications and is expanding its manufacturing capability with a strong emphasis on turning complex designs into reliable, repeatable production. The role is centered on making sure new products are introduced into manufacturing in a controlled and practical way, with a clear path from prototype builds to scalable volume output.
What the role involves
As the NPI Engineer, you will be responsible for guiding RF and microwave assemblies through the transition from early development builds into production. The focus is not just on getting products built, but on ensuring the manufacturing process is robust, efficient, and suitable for scale. You will work closely with engineering and production teams to remove issues early, improve manufacturability, and put the right controls in place for consistent output.
- Take ownership of the move from prototype builds into production manufacture.
- Plan and support pilot builds, dealing with issues as they arise during the transition.
- Partner with design engineers to improve manufacturability and assembly practicality.
- Define production processes, tooling needs, and detailed work instructions.
- Develop process flows, control plans, and the documentation required to support manufacturing.
- Assist with production ramp-up and contribute to improvements in yield and efficiency.
- Lead structured root-cause analysis and corrective action work using methods such as 8D, DMAIC, and FMEA.
- Help ensure that new products are introduced in a way that is stable, repeatable, and ready for scale-up.
What the employer is looking for
The client is seeking someone with prior experience in NPI or a similar manufacturing-oriented engineering position. A background in electronics manufacturing is important, although experience from another high-reliability environment would also be relevant. The ideal candidate will have already taken products from development into production and will understand the practical requirements of process control and manufacturing readiness.
- Previous experience in an NPI Engineer role or a closely related manufacturing engineering position.
- Experience in electronics or another high-reliability manufacturing setting.
- Proven involvement in moving products from development or prototype stages into production.
- Knowledge of process control and what is needed to prepare manufacturing for volume output.
- Confidence working with design, quality, and production stakeholders.
- An engineering qualification, or equivalent hands-on technical experience.
- Ability to work effectively on technically complex RF, microwave, or similar advanced electronic products.
- A practical, hands-on approach and a preference for being close to the manufacturing process.
About the environment
This position is described as a direct and practical opportunity for someone who wants to work on technically demanding products without unnecessary layers of management or process. It is well suited to an engineer who enjoys being close to manufacturing, solving real production issues, and having a visible impact on how products are built and scaled.
