What you will do
- Roll out and operate new data center infrastructure in partnership with other teams.
- Watch for equipment or infrastructure problems, document issues, and use established procedures to investigate, diagnose, and resolve them with the right support and resources.
- Protect data security and integrity by tracking media and checking for unusual security concerns, including situations where data may not have been erased properly, while following Googleâs security standards.
- Break down equipment that has reached end of life, including work involving part replacement or maintenance, across one or more teams.
- Carry out repairs, corrective actions, and preventive maintenance on equipment, servers, machines, and infrastructure, selecting from multiple possible solutions when needed.
- Install, set up, test, troubleshoot, and maintain hardware and server software, including servers, components, and Googleâs Linux cluster environment.
- Handle more complex infrastructure elements such as networks, routers, hubs, bridges, switches, and networking protocols.
- Contribute to or lead small project teams during larger installations and help create contingency plans for those projects.
- Perform physical tasks such as moving racks and installing them as part of routine operations.
What the team does
The Hardware Operations team is responsible for the physical infrastructure behind Googleâs search technology and other large-scale services. The broader AI and Infrastructure organization works on systems that support Google users, Google Cloud customers, and Googlers around the world. The teamâs work spans software and hardware, including AI infrastructure, global networking, data center operations, systems research, and related hyperscale computing efforts.
What you need
- Hands-on experience with mechanical or electrical assembly, or with component-level repair and troubleshooting of technical equipment.
- Experience diagnosing and resolving issues with operating systems, computer hardware, and server hardware.
- Working knowledge of networking protocols.
- Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 lb (23 kg).
- Physical capability to work for extended periods while bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling, and lifting frequently.
- Availability to work outside normal hours, including weekends, nights, holidays, and shift-based schedules.
- A bachelorâs degree or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 4 years spent maintaining and monitoring server systems.
- Experience repairing and troubleshooting IT equipment at the component level, or experience in a similar technical support or infrastructure role such as systems administration, network deployment engineering, or help desk work.
- Background working in a data center or network operations center.
- Experience using Linux.
- Experience managing projects, taking leadership responsibility, and working effectively across teams.
- English fluency is required unless the posting explicitly states otherwise.
