This role sits within Googleâs Hardware Operations organization, which supports the physical infrastructure behind the companyâs search, cloud, and AI services. The position is focused on keeping data center systems running reliably, with hands-on work across servers, hardware components, networking equipment, and related infrastructure. It is a practical, physically active role in a fast-moving environment where you will help install, maintain, troubleshoot, and retire equipment that supports Googleâs global services.
The broader AI and Infrastructure organization is responsible for delivering computing power, reliability, and scale for Google users, Google Cloud customers, and internal teams. The work spans hardware and software infrastructure, including TPUs, Vertex AI, global networking, data center operations, and systems research. In this role, you will contribute directly to that mission by supporting third-party data center operations and helping ensure infrastructure is deployed and maintained to Googleâs standards.
What you will do
- Roll out and operate new data center infrastructure in coordination with other teams.
- Follow established procedures to investigate, diagnose, and resolve issues affecting equipment or infrastructure as they occur.
- Protect data security and integrity by tracking media and checking for any irregularities, such as media that has not been erased correctly, while following Googleâs security requirements.
- Break down equipment that has reached end of life, including work involving part replacement or maintenance, across one or more teams.
- Carry out repairs, corrective actions, and preventative maintenance on servers, machines, equipment, and infrastructure, selecting the appropriate fix when there may be more than one possible solution.
- Install, configure, test, troubleshoot, and maintain hardware and server software, including Linux-based cluster systems.
- Work with more advanced infrastructure elements such as routers, switches, hubs, bridges, networks, and networking protocols.
- Take part in, or lead, small project teams for larger installations and help develop contingency plans for those projects.
- Perform manual handling tasks such as moving racks and installing them as part of routine data center work.
What you need
- Practical experience assembling mechanical or electrical systems, or performing component-level repair and troubleshooting on technical equipment.
- Background diagnosing and troubleshooting operating systems, computer hardware, and server hardware.
- Working knowledge of networking protocols.
- Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 lb (23 kg) and to carry out physically demanding work for extended periods, including bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
- Availability to work outside standard business hours, including weekends, nights, holidays, and shift-based schedules when required.
- A bachelorâs degree or an equivalent level of practical experience.
- At least 4 years of experience maintaining and monitoring server systems.
- Experience with component-level repair and troubleshooting on IT equipment, or experience in a similar technical support or infrastructure role such as systems administration, network deployment engineering, or help desk work.
- Experience working in a data center or network operations center setting.
- Experience using Linux operating systems.
- Experience with project coordination or management, leadership, and cross-team collaboration.
- English language proficiency, unless a specific posting states otherwise.
Additional context
This is an early-career level role, meaning the work is carried out with direction and in collaboration with teammates while you continue building knowledge of the relevant systems and processes. The position is based in London, UK, and the work pattern is shift-based, with non-standard hours expected as part of the role. The job involves regular physical activity and hands-on infrastructure work in a data center environment.
