Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon Overview

Company Name Lloyd & Cowan
Job Role Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon
Qualifications Not Specified
Category Healthcare Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location Leeds

This is a rare opening for a small animal veterinary surgeon to join a highly supportive and well-resourced team in West Yorkshire, around 50 minutes to the west of Leeds. The practice is described as large enough to provide strong clinical support, modern equipment, and a varied caseload, while still keeping a friendly, collaborative atmosphere in everyday work.

You would be part of a nine-vet small animal team with a wide spread of experience and clinical interests. The group includes certificate holders in surgery and imaging, as well as experienced medicine vets, supported by a substantial team of qualified veterinary nurses and other support staff. The environment is intended to be one where questions are welcomed, cases are discussed openly, and ongoing development is encouraged rather than leaving people to manage everything alone.

Practice and clinical environment

The practice is purpose-built and exceptionally well equipped, giving the team access to a strong range of diagnostic and treatment tools. Facilities include a CT scanner, digital x-ray, ultrasound, an in-house laboratory, dedicated surgical suites, separate inpatient accommodation, and 24/7 onsite nursing cover. This setup supports a broad and busy caseload and creates a strong base for both general practice work and longer-term clinical development.

Out-of-hours work is handled externally, which allows the team to disconnect properly outside working hours and supports a healthier balance between work and personal life. The caseload is described as busy and varied, making the role a good fit for someone who wants to keep building confidence as a general practice vet while also having room to explore particular clinical interests over time. The practice actively encourages and supports certificate study.

What the role involves

  • Providing small animal veterinary care within a busy, varied general practice caseload.
  • Working alongside a nine-vet team with a broad mix of clinical backgrounds and interests.
  • Collaborating with certificate holders in surgery and imaging, as well as experienced medicine clinicians.
  • Making use of advanced diagnostic and surgical facilities in day-to-day clinical work.
  • Contributing to a supportive team culture where discussion of cases and shared learning are part of normal practice.
  • Taking part in an approximately one-in-eight weekend rota.
  • Helping maintain a high standard of patient care across both consulting and clinical work.

What the practice is looking for

The advert is aimed at an experienced small animal vet rather than a new graduate. The practice says the role is not suitable for newly qualified vets and that applicants should ideally have a minimum of two years of UK experience. The ideal candidate will be someone who wants to continue developing as a strong all-round GP vet, while also having the chance to deepen specific interests in the future.

Because the team is highly collaborative and well supported, the role would suit someone who values teamwork, is comfortable asking questions, and wants to learn from colleagues with a wide range of expertise. An interest in further professional development is important, as certificate study is encouraged and backed by the practice.

Package and working arrangements

  • Permanent position.
  • Salary from £40,000 to £65,000 depending on experience.
  • Four-day working week.
  • Approximately one-in-eight weekend rota.
  • Eight weeks of annual leave, including bank holidays.
  • Strong CPD support and funding.
  • Certificates encouraged and supported.
  • Professional fees covered.
  • Out-of-hours work outsourced.

Location and lifestyle

The practice is based in the Keighley area, giving easy access to the Yorkshire countryside and the Dales while also remaining well connected to Leeds and Manchester for city amenities, dining, shopping, and nightlife. The advert also highlights that the area is more affordable than many larger cities, which can make day-to-day living go further and support a better overall quality of life.
