Senior VAT Manager EMEA, AWS Overview

Company Name Amazon
Job Role Senior VAT Manager EMEA, AWS
Qualifications Bachelor’s
Category IT Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location London

Amazon is looking for an indirect tax senior manager to join the EMEA Tax Department and support the AWS cloud computing business, with the role based in either London or Luxembourg. This is a VAT advisory position with a broad remit across the region, designed for someone who can work independently, collaborate well with others, and help guide the business through a fast-changing indirect tax landscape as AWS continues to expand across EMEA.

The role sits within a team that advises on a wide range of matters beyond standard product taxation. The work spans digital services, telecommunications, training, goods movements, acquisitions, new product launches, billing systems, supply chains, infrastructure, and sustainability-related topics. The team also interacts with tax authorities through horizontal monitoring, ad hoc questions, audits, and public policy engagement, including consultations and workshops on new legislation.

What you will do

  • Deliver indirect tax and VAT advice to AWS across EMEA, with the main focus on AWS-branded cloud and marketplace offerings.
  • Support additional AWS Group businesses, including entities such as Annapurna Labs, so the work is not limited to services sold directly under the AWS brand.
  • Advise on the tax implications of AWS infrastructure and operating models, including data centres, points of presence, server-rack deployment, chip design, and related supply-chain activity.
  • Help shape the tax approach for AWS expansion into new EMEA markets and support the business as more countries introduce VAT rules for electronically supplied and digital services provided by non-residents.
  • Provide guidance on new ventures, new products, and customer-facing issues, helping the business identify workable solutions to tax-related pain points.
  • Communicate legal and regulatory changes proactively so the business can respond quickly to new obligations or opportunities.
  • Review the wider commercial picture when advising, including pricing, user experience, billing, communications, and customer FAQs.
  • Take part in public consultations and policy discussions, including work related to e-invoicing and the future direction of indirect taxation.
  • Build and maintain relationships with tax authorities through monitoring arrangements, informal enquiries, and audit support.
  • Work closely with compliance colleagues on registrations, high-level tax return review, authority management, audit handling, internal reviews, process improvement, and training.
  • Drive projects forward in a shared-team environment, coordinating with internal stakeholders and external advisers while drawing on support from colleagues when needed.
  • Contribute across a broad and fluid workload, with shared ownership across the team rather than narrow specialisation in a single topic.

About the team and scope of the role

AWS offers a wide portfolio of cloud-based products and services, including compute, storage, databases, analytics, networking, mobile, developer tools, management tools, internet of things, security, and enterprise applications. The business also provides support services to help customers deploy AWS solutions, along with training and certification offerings. In addition, AWS Marketplace enables customers to find, purchase, and immediately use digital products from third-party sellers.

The team’s remit is intentionally broad. AWS operates in more than 40 countries across EMEA and continues to grow, so the successful candidate will gain exposure to a wide range of jurisdictions and business models. The role is advisory only and does not include compliance ownership, although it works closely with compliance teams on operational tax matters.

What you need

  • A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent relevant business qualification, such as Chartered Tax Adviser, ACCA, or CIMA, or comparable experience/qualification gained with tax authorities.
  • Strong knowledge of VAT in the EU and UK, ideally developed through advisory work rather than compliance-focused roles.
  • Experience in an indirect tax function supporting multinational activity, or experience from a legal firm, accountancy firm, or tax authority dealing with cross-border or multinational taxpayers.
  • Proven ability to manage several priorities at once and keep projects moving forward.
  • Experience working independently and leading projects without close day-to-day supervision.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to understand processes and systems.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to make progress in situations where not everything is fully defined.
  • A quick-learning, positive, professional, and practical approach.
  • Ability to work collegially with others while also taking ownership and driving work forward.
  • Interest in broad, cross-functional tax work across multiple countries and business areas.
