Principal Hardware Performance Specialist Overview

Company Name ARM
Job Role Principal Hardware Performance Specialist
Qualifications Not Specified
Category Engineering Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location Cambridge

This role sits within Arm’s Infrastructure Engineering and Applications organisation and focuses on making sure the company’s hardware platform is highly performant, well managed, and aligned to the needs of engineers across the business. The position is responsible for helping ensure that Arm has world-class hardware across a broad estate, from mobile devices through to high-performance compute and server environments, so that the company can continue building the future of AI on Arm.

The role requires a consistent, scalable approach to managing hardware in a complex environment with multiple suppliers. You will work closely with infrastructure specialists and engineering teams to make sure the platforms used by Arm’s engineers are optimised to support the company’s strategic priorities.

What you will do

  • Take ownership of the performance and optimisation of Arm’s hardware platform so it remains best in class and continues to support the business effectively.
  • Maintain the cross-vendor hardware catalogue and help define the future roadmap for hardware across mobile, laptop, workstation, desktop, and server categories.
  • Partner with engineering teams to design and run performance testing based on realistic engineering workloads.
  • Produce and maintain documentation for server systems and operational processes, ensuring the service model fits Arm’s core workload requirements.
  • Work alongside operating system teams to ensure the hardware estate can support both present and future operating system needs for deployment and maintenance.
  • Collaborate with the automation team to ensure hardware management is built around an infrastructure-as-code-first mindset.
  • Encourage reuse of Arm-developed solutions wherever possible within the hardware portfolio.
  • Act as the go-to authority for hardware platforms across Arm.
  • Work with hardware suppliers to align product roadmaps and secure continuity of supply for Arm’s hardware requirements.
  • Deliver an integrated hardware management capability across several hardware vendors.
  • Support infrastructure and engineering teams by providing the most performant platforms possible for Arm’s engineers to achieve the company’s goals.

What you need

  • Solid, demonstrable experience of benchmarking and optimising hardware in an enterprise environment.
  • A track record of collaborating with hardware partners to create jointly owned roadmaps.
  • Hands-on experience improving hardware performance in both end-user computing and server-based environments.
  • Good knowledge of automation as it applies to hardware administration and benchmarking.
  • Experience choosing hardware for Linux, Windows, and Apple operating systems.
  • Experience with data centre hardware management tools from multiple suppliers, including HPE OneView, Dell OpenManage, and Fujitsu iRMC.
  • Helpful but not essential: experience in a high-performance computing environment.
  • Helpful but not essential: familiarity with containers and benchmarking portable workloads.
