Senior Regional Environmental Manager EMEA, AWS Environmental Overview

Company Name Amazon
Job Role Senior Regional Environmental Manager EMEA, AWS Environmental
Qualifications Bachelor’s
Category IT Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location London

Amazon is seeking a highly experienced and self-driven senior environmental leader to oversee the EMEA region for AWS Environmental. This role sits within a fast-growing team that supports AWS’s global expansion while protecting environmental performance and ensuring compliance across data center operations. The position carries end-to-end responsibility for the environmental lifecycle of AWS infrastructure in EMEA, beginning with site selection and due diligence and continuing through permitting, construction, operational compliance, and decommissioning.

As a senior leader in the Global Environmental organization, you will combine strategic influence with hands-on delivery. You will manage a distributed team of Regional Environmental Managers and Regional Environmental Engineers, guide regional priorities, and help shape both regional and global environmental strategy. The role is central to enabling AWS growth while maintaining strong environmental standards and regulatory compliance.

What you will do

  • Lead the EMEA environmental function for AWS across the full lifecycle of data center development and operations, from early site evaluation through decommissioning.
  • Manage multiple Regional Environmental Managers and Regional Environmental Engineers, providing coaching, performance management, development support, and hiring leadership.
  • Define the strategic direction for regional environmental work covering infrastructure development, operational compliance, and environmental programs.
  • Contribute as a member of the global environmental leadership group, helping shape broader strategy and sharing best practices across regions.
  • Oversee environmental due diligence for site acquisition and development, including Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments, brownfield redevelopment reviews, health-risk assessments, and evaluation of liabilities tied to acquired properties.
  • Create and execute permitting and site-management plans that support timely, compliant construction and transition into operations for new sites and expansions.
  • Lead interactions and negotiations with environmental regulators and agencies to secure permits and support development plans.
  • Work with internal partner teams to refine site masterplans so they account for environmentally sensitive areas and align with project schedules and standards.
  • Assess environmental risks tied to siting and development decisions and define practical mitigation strategies.
  • Oversee natural, biological, and cultural resource evaluations as part of permitting and development work.
  • Take ownership of environmental compliance across all operational EMEA data centers and facilities.
  • Help create and improve internal environmental standards and policies at both regional and global levels.
  • Provide technical guidance and complete detailed compliance work where needed, including research and analysis for complex or unclear regulatory situations.
  • Lead external strategy and programmatic efforts that may include regulatory framework development, advocacy support, stakeholder engagement, and environmental assessment programs.
  • Identify opportunities to improve AWS’s environmental risk management and team efficiency, then drive implementation of those improvements.
  • Build, track, and report metrics that measure project delivery and environmental performance across the region.
  • Resolve difficult issues and escalations by balancing immediate needs with long-term risk and business priorities.
  • Represent AWS in community and public-facing discussions related to permitting, development, and operations, including helping explain AWS’s environmental profile to local stakeholders.
  • Partner closely with teams in Real Estate, Legal, Risk, Water, Design, Public Policy, Construction, and Operations to deliver compliant infrastructure and identify environmental opportunities.
  • Work with regulators, environmental consultants, and contractors, and be recognized as a regional subject matter expert.
  • Maintain accurate issue tracking and reporting, and drive open items through to closure.

Team and role context

The AWS Environmental team supports infrastructure from the earliest planning stages through design, construction, and operations. In this role, you will lead a regional team while also staying close to technical work. On a typical day, you might review a complex Phase II environmental site assessment for a proposed data center, negotiate permit terms with a regulator, coach a team member through a compliance challenge, or present regional performance data to senior leadership.

You will join AWS Infrastructure Services, the organization responsible for designing, planning, delivering, and operating AWS’s global infrastructure. This group supports the data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling systems that keep AWS services running. The team works on highly complex problems and collaborates across disciplines including engineering, supply chain, security, and operations. Amazon describes the culture as inclusive and collaborative, with an emphasis on bold ideas and ownership through to completion.

Amazon also notes its long-term sustainability commitments, including The Climate Pledge and the goal of powering operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025 on the path to net zero carbon by 2040.

What Amazon is looking for

  • Extensive experience leading large teams and a strong record of hiring, developing, and managing high-performing technical professionals.
  • A bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, geology, environmental science, or a related discipline.
  • At least 15 years of experience in environmental due diligence, permitting, and compliance across multiple media for both existing sites and new development.
  • At least 10 years of progressive experience with transactional Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments, site investigation and remediation, and brownfield development in EMEA.
  • At least 7 years of people-management experience leading geographically distributed teams across multiple regions.
  • Experience creating programmatic tools and methods to assess and manage environmental risk and contaminated-site portfolios, working with finance, real estate, legal, and external agencies.
  • Experience with Sarbanes-Oxley controls and financial reporting for remedial activities, plus construction-site compliance experience.
  • A strong record of delivering multiple high-priority projects under tight deadlines while coordinating with partner teams, consultants, internal counsel, and regulators.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally on strategic initiatives and multi-year plans that improve corporate environmental performance.
  • Advanced study in environmental science, engineering, or a related field and/or professional certifications such as PE, PG, CHMM, or equivalent.
  • Experience in EMEA site investigation, remediation, and/or development, especially on large-scale redevelopment work in fast-paced settings.
  • Experience with data centers or other critical infrastructure in due diligence, design, construction, or risk assessment is strongly preferred.
  • Solid knowledge of current and emerging environmental requirements across EMEA.
  • Experience supporting community and public engagement.
  • Experience working with large, geographically distributed teams across a varied project portfolio.
