| Category | IT Jobs |

| Location | Cambridge |
This role sits within AWS Simple Storage Service and focuses on leading a software engineering team that builds and supports core services for S3 Compute. The position is aimed at an experienced engineering leader who can guide a group of motivated software engineers in a demanding, high-scale environment where the work has direct impact on a globally used storage platform.
The team works on services that help customers understand how their stored objects are being used, including reporting and telemetry-style capabilities such as usage reports, CloudWatch metrics, and CloudTrail events. The environment is extremely large in scale, with trillions of objects stored and accessed every day, so the work involves solving difficult distributed-systems problems around global event processing and delivering storage and usage information reliably to customers.
Because AWS operates on a strong ownership model, this team is expected to support the services it builds end to end. That includes maintaining a high bar for automated testing, verification, design review, and code review, as well as taking part in a regular on-call rotation. The organization emphasizes operational excellence and aims to reduce overnight incidents while still being ready to respond when issues arise in a 24/7 worldwide service.
What you will do
- Manage the daily work and priorities of the development team in the S3 Compute area.
- Define and evolve the team’s long-term roadmap and technical direction.
- Make sure the team is operationally prepared to support production services.
- Coach, support, and challenge the engineers on your team so they continue to grow and improve.
- Partner with stakeholders and customers to confirm the team is solving the right problems and delivering the right outcomes.
- Contribute to the design and implementation of important S3 services and capabilities.
- Help address the technical challenges involved in processing events at global scale and surfacing object usage and storage insights to customers.
- Share responsibility for live service support through the team’s on-call process.
- Promote engineering practices that keep the service reliable, scalable, and maintainable.
What the team environment is like
This is a highly available service that runs around the clock across the world, so the team operates with a strong sense of accountability for production systems. Engineers and managers are both expected to participate in incident response and operational support. The culture values well-designed systems, disciplined engineering practices, and a practical approach to keeping services healthy and dependable.
The role is based in Cambridge, United Kingdom, within Amazon’s software development organization.
What you need to bring
- Experience leading engineering teams in a management capacity.
- A solid software engineering background and familiarity with working directly inside engineering teams.
- Understanding of the full development lifecycle across software, hardware, and networking, including standards, reviews, source control, builds, testing, certification, and live operations.
- Experience creating or improving system architectures with reliability and scale in mind.
- Experience collaborating with product and program management partners.
- Experience building productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to communicate clearly with users, technical peers, and senior leaders about requirements, technical designs, product features, and strategy.
- Experience hiring, recruiting, mentoring, coaching, and managing software engineers to help them become more effective.
Additional experience that would be valuable
- Experience gathering requirements and presenting technical ideas to users, technical teams, and senior leadership.
- Experience growing engineering talent through mentoring and coaching.
