Mistral AI is looking for a backend software engineer to help build the core systems behind Mistral Cloud. The role sits within the Engineering & Infra organization and focuses on creating reliable, high-performance backend services and APIs that can support a rapidly growing enterprise customer base. The work is centered on the companyâs cloud platform and touches the foundational pieces that power product delivery at scale.
What you will work on
- Designing, developing, and maintaining scalable backend features and APIs with modern frameworks.
- Building systems that remain fast and dependable even as usage grows across distributed environments.
- Contributing to platform capabilities such as authentication, billing, AI tooling, observability, connectors, and developer experience.
- Creating backend and platform architectures that are secure, efficient, and able to scale with the business.
- Working with infrastructure specialists on deployment strategies, monitoring, and performance improvements.
- Writing code that is easy to maintain, well structured, and properly documented.
- Reviewing code and helping the team maintain strong technical standards and engineering practices.
- Partnering with product managers, frontend engineers, designers, and data/AI engineers to deliver complete end-to-end features.
- Collaborating across AI Studio, Le Chat, and Mistral Code to keep the platform experience consistent.
- Solving challenging technical problems involving distributed systems and the integration of AI products.
- Staying current with emerging tools and approaches, including AI/LLM integration, observability, and backend frameworks, and bringing useful ideas into production.
What the company is looking for
- A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least five years of relevant professional experience.
- Strong programming ability in Golang.
- Deep understanding of backend fundamentals such as APIs, databases, caching, messaging systems, and distributed architectures.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, plus exposure to bare-metal infrastructure.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a careful eye for detail.
- An ownership mindset and the ability to deliver features from start to finish with minimal oversight.
- Clear communication skills and a collaborative approach to working with others.
- A low-ego, team-oriented attitude and curiosity for learning.
- Helpful additional experience includes frontend development with TypeScript, React, or Next.js, broader full-stack experience, infrastructure management with Docker, CI/CD, Kubernetes, Helm, or Terraform, and observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, or Datadog.
Interview process
- An introductory call lasting 45 minutes.
- A 45-minute technical interview with live coding.
- A 45-minute technical interview focused on system design.
- An optional 60-minute deep dive into a project.
- A 30-minute culture-fit discussion.
- Reference checks.

Location and working setup
This position is mainly based in one of Mistral AIâs European offices, with Paris and London highlighted as the primary locations. Candidates who already live in those cities, or who are willing to relocate, will be prioritized. The team places strong value on in-person collaboration to support relationships and communication.
Remote candidates may also be considered if they are based in France, the UK, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, or Italy. For remote hires, the company requires an onboarding visit to the Paris headquarters during the first week, with travel and accommodation covered, and then at least three days in Paris every six weeks, again with travel and accommodation covered.
