Graduate Teaching Assistant – School of Mathematics Statistics Overview

What the role involves

• Helping plan, organise, and deliver undergraduate teaching activities.
• Taking part in teaching and assessment work at undergraduate level to strengthen students’ understanding of core topics and help them identify the main learning points from course materials.
• Handling course administration tasks within set deadlines, including sharing information effectively, marking work, assessing students, and providing constructive feedback in a timely way.
• Assisting with the creation and improvement of teaching materials so that they match the intended learning outcomes and are delivered in suitable ways.
• Using learning technologies to support teaching, course organisation, feedback, and assessment, including blended and online teaching through Moodle and other IT tools.
• Applying specialist subject knowledge in a way that meets the needs of individual learners and groups, while supporting an inclusive, evidence-based approach that encourages participation and achievement.
• Taking part in assessment using a range of methods, including oral assessment where required, and giving feedback that is timely, relevant, and helpful to student learning.
• Supporting student projects, dissertations, and practical work by advising on methods, techniques, and skills that help students apply and transfer knowledge.
• Responding appropriately to varied student support needs while contributing to supervision and practical learning activities.
• Taking part in continuing professional development as appropriate.
• Completing any other reasonable duties requested by the Head of School.
• Contributing to the University’s international profile in line with its strategic plan.

What the University is looking for

• An honours degree at SCQF Level 10 in a relevant subject, or equivalent expertise in a related field, along with an understanding of the principles of teaching, learning, and assessment.
• Current registration for, and active progress toward, a PhD (MPhil/PhD) or a PGT qualification in a relevant discipline.
• Strong expertise in the subject area.
• Experience of teaching or supporting undergraduate or postgraduate students in face-to-face, online, or distance-learning settings.
• Experience supervising, mentoring, or teaching students in practical or active learning environments.
• Relevant administrative experience, such as student support or course administration.
• Excellent communication and presentation abilities.
• Confidence using IT and software tools that support teaching and learning.
• The ability to work effectively on your own and as part of a team.
• The ability to work to deadlines and manage tasks efficiently.
• A commitment to the University’s published values and professional behaviours.
