Company Name Amazon
Job Role Area Manager
Qualifications Not Specified
Category IT Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location Rest of UK

This role is a shift-based operations management position at one of Amazon’s operational sites. It is designed for someone who wants practical leadership experience in a fast-moving environment, overseeing a large and diverse team while helping the site respond to customer demand. The job combines people management, operational control, data analysis, and continuous improvement, with a strong emphasis on safety, productivity, and smooth day-to-day execution.

What you will do

  • Lead a sizeable and varied team so the area you manage can keep pace with demand and operate effectively.
  • Take a hands-on approach to running the area, learning how a global business manages complex operations and what is needed to keep everything working efficiently.
  • Put your team’s working methods into practice to improve productivity while collaborating closely with colleagues to resolve operational issues.
  • Build and maintain a strong culture focused on safety and wellbeing for your team and the wider site.
  • Review performance, identify root causes of issues, and introduce corrective actions so quality and productivity remain consistently strong and business goals are met across all shifts.
  • Support and guide your team while also handling administrative responsibilities and helping to create a positive team environment.
  • Examine performance data and recommend process changes that improve efficiency and customer service.
  • Work with other managers to align and standardise shift processes.
  • Carry out shift work on site, with responsibility for maintaining safety standards and monitoring process efficiency.
  • Balance routine team management and daily operational tasks with escalations, improvement projects, and wider contingency planning.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in other teams and with external partners so the operation stays aligned to customer demand and performance targets.
  • Use data and performance metrics with business leaders, and discuss the practical advantages and disadvantages of technical improvements with engineers.

What the role looks like day to day

Your working day will be varied rather than repetitive. You will spend time prioritising team leadership and operational tasks, but you will also deal with escalations, process improvement activity, and planning for wider operational disruptions. Because the role sits within the operations function, you will regularly work with people across different teams and outside partners to keep the site on track. Data analysis is an important part of the job, as is discussing technical changes with engineering colleagues and using evidence to guide decisions.

What you need

  • A bachelor’s degree, or an MBA, in business, data science, public administration, finance, engineering, human resources, or a related discipline.
  • Good written and spoken English skills, with the ability to communicate smoothly with stakeholders at all levels.
  • For preferred candidates, a bachelor’s degree completed within the last 12 months in Engineering, Technology, Science, Operations Research, Robotics, Mathematics, or a related subject, or an associate degree together with experience working for Amazon or one of its subsidiaries or affiliates.
  • Experience communicating complex information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Background in manufacturing, production, distribution logistics, retail, or grocery management environments.
  • Professional experience using Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Comfort working in an operational leadership role that requires collaboration, analysis, and continuous improvement.
