Principal Private Cloud Engineer Overview

Company Name ARM
Job Role Principal Private Cloud Engineer
Qualifications Not Specified
Category IT Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location Cambridge

This role is focused on setting the technical vision for a private cloud platform built on OpenStack. The platform is intended to support large engineering workloads at scale and sits at the heart of the organisation’s infrastructure strategy. The work is grounded in modern platform engineering practices, with a strong emphasis on automation, APIs, and an excellent developer experience. The successful candidate will work across teams and functions to shape architecture and guide the platform’s evolution, while also contributing as an active member of the OpenStack open source community rather than simply operating upstream software.

What you will do

  • Own the long-range architecture and strategy for a multi-tenant private cloud platform.
  • Lead the technical integration of OpenStack across compute, networking, and storage.
  • Set standards for infrastructure as code, API design, and automation, with Terraform as a core part of the approach.
  • Improve reliability, scalability, and performance across the full platform stack.
  • Act as a senior technical leader working across multiple teams and domains.
  • Shape platform engineering practices, including CI/CD, telemetry, and observability.
  • Address complex problems that span distributed systems and high-performance computing environments.
  • Help teams adopt the new platform successfully and remove barriers to adoption.
  • Work closely with internal developer platform teams to create a first-rate self-service experience.
  • Identify workflow bottlenecks and improve how multidisciplinary teams work together.
  • Collaborate with the open source community to encourage upstream feature development and adoption.
  • Contribute to the platform as an active participant in the OpenStack community.

What you need

  • Strong expertise in OpenStack, Linux, and distributed systems.
  • A solid software engineering background, including Python, APIs, and systems design.
  • Extensive practical experience with Ansible, Terraform, and infrastructure automation.
  • Experience operating large systems or environments at significant scale, including multi-region setups.
  • Deep knowledge of networking, storage, and Linux systems, covering both physical and software-defined infrastructure.
  • A proven record of influencing technical direction across teams.
  • Ability to solve difficult cross-system issues in distributed and HPC environments.
  • Experience with Kubernetes and cloud-native platforms would be an advantage.
  • Experience with low-level debugging, performance investigation, and tuning would be an advantage.
  • Full-stack experience would be beneficial.
  • Exposure to internal developer platforms such as Backstage or Roadie would be beneficial.

What is offered

  • The chance to define the direction of a critical engineering platform.
  • The opportunity to influence technical decisions across the organisation.
  • A working environment built around impact, innovation, and collaboration.
  • A salary in the range of £126,200 to £170,800 per year.
  • Support for candidates who need accommodations during recruitment, such as extra breaks between interviews, having documents read aloud, or help with office accessibility.
  • An inclusive equal-opportunity environment that welcomes applicants and colleagues from all backgrounds and does not discriminate on protected characteristics.

Working arrangement

The role follows Arm’s hybrid working model. The company’s approach combines time in the office with time in other locations, with the aim of supporting both high performance and flexibility. Teams are given the ability to decide the specific hybrid pattern that best fits their work and needs, and the exact arrangement for this role will be explained during the application process. In some situations, flexibility may be limited by legal, regulatory, tax, or similar local requirements, and the company will work with candidates to find the best possible solution.

Additional information

Arm also provides recruitment support for candidates who need adjustments or accommodations. Examples mentioned include breaks between interviews, documents being read aloud, and office accessibility support. Requests are handled confidentially and only shared where necessary to arrange the accommodation.

The company states that it is an equal opportunity employer and aims to maintain a respectful environment where opportunities are open to all applicants and colleagues. It describes its workforce as diverse and innovative, and says it does not discriminate on the basis of race, colour, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.

The posting lists a salary range of £126,200 to £170,800 per year.
