Category IT Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location Manchester

This role sits within Anaplan’s Predictive Intelligence engineering group, where the team builds the backend systems behind the Syrup platform and the company’s forecasting and predictive products. The group is responsible for the production services that support forecasting, scoring, and data processing, as well as the pipelines and infrastructure that make machine learning and AI capabilities available to enterprise customers. As a senior backend engineer, you will help shape core services across this stack, with a strong focus on writing high-quality Python that other engineers can rely on and extend.

You will report to the Director of Engineering for Predictive Intelligence and collaborate closely with backend engineers, data scientists, and platform partners. The position is based in Manchester, United Kingdom.

What you will do

  • Architect and implement backend services and APIs that are scalable and resilient, contributing directly to the core Predictive Intelligence platform.
  • Develop and refine the services that support forecasting, scoring, and data processing, making sure they remain performant, scalable, and cost-conscious as usage grows.
  • Produce Python code that is clear, maintainable, and well covered by tests, and help establish engineering practices that make the codebase easier for the wider team to understand and evolve.
  • Work side by side with data scientists and machine learning engineers to operationalize models, and build the data pipelines and inference workflows needed to run them in production.
  • Share responsibility for production operations by taking part in on-call coverage, responding to incidents, and helping drive improvements after issues are resolved.
  • Participate in technical design discussions and code reviews, contributing to higher engineering quality across the team.
  • Support the growth of other engineers through mentoring, guidance, and constructive feedback.
  • Identify opportunities for improvements that span multiple services or teams and take ownership of delivering those platform-level enhancements.

What you need

  • Substantial experience as a software engineer building backend systems that run in production.
  • Deep practical knowledge of Python and a history of delivering production code that is efficient, reliable, and easy to maintain.
  • Experience operating containerized services on Kubernetes within at least one major cloud provider, such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure.
  • Familiarity with data warehousing or analytics technologies, including tools such as Snowflake, Iceberg, Trino, or Postgres.
  • Understanding of how machine learning and AI solutions are deployed and operated in production, including the supporting data and model pipelines.
  • Ability to work independently, take responsibility for important systems, and make progress in situations where the requirements are not fully defined.
  • Experience participating in on-call support for production systems and helping improve operational reliability.
  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical subject, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice-to-have experience

  • Hands-on MLOps experience, including model training pipelines, deployment processes, and tools such as MLflow.
  • Experience turning data science or research code into production services that are stable and observable.
  • Exposure to orchestration tools such as Prefect, Airflow, or dbt, along with modern data lake architectures.
  • Experience working with gradient-boosted trees, neural networks, or optimization solvers in production settings.
  • Familiarity with LLM-based or agentic application patterns and integrating AI services into products.
  • Background in forecasting, demand planning, retail, or supply chain domains.
