Systems Engineer, Route 53 DNS Services Overview

Company Name Amazon
Job Role Systems Engineer, Route 53 DNS Services
Qualifications Not Specified
Category IT Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location London

This role sits within AWS Infrastructure Services, the organization responsible for designing, planning, delivering, and running the global infrastructure that keeps AWS operating. The team supports the data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling systems that allow customers to keep using AWS services reliably. The work is large in scale, technically demanding, and closely tied to the performance and resilience of the cloud platform.

The position is part of Route 53 DNS Services, where the team handles DNS at enormous volume, responds in extremely low latency, and works toward very high durability. The environment is fast-moving and has the feel of a startup, but with the scale and impact of AWS. The team is looking for engineers who are comfortable tackling difficult problems, questioning established approaches, and helping redesign systems, processes, and tools when better options exist.

You do not need prior cloud experience to be considered. The role is intended as an opportunity to learn AWS from the inside while operating and engineering systems at massive scale. The team values strong operational thinking, networking knowledge, and systems engineering depth, and it also places importance on coaching and supporting others. New hires are paired with a peer buddy to help them understand the technology, the tools, and the business problems the team is solving, and there is also a formal mentor-search tool to help employees find a mentor that fits their location, job family, and level.

What you will do

  • Design and implement new services for Route 53 DNS.
  • Use Linux and networking skills to diagnose issues, build fixes, and develop workarounds when needed.
  • Investigate customer problems deeply and trace them back to their root cause.
  • Review service metrics, spot unhealthy trends, and take action when performance moves in the wrong direction.
  • Work with highly experienced Amazon engineers to solve complex technical problems.
  • Explore and introduce new ways to automate operational work and reduce manual effort.
  • Build automation that improves operational efficiency and helps the team scale.
  • Contribute to broader AWS efforts that remove operational friction, improve software delivery, and eliminate bottlenecks affecting multiple teams.
  • Help operate DNS services at very large scale while continually improving reliability and the customer experience.
  • Take part in a collaborative engineering culture that encourages deep investigation, practical problem solving, and continuous improvement.

What the team is like

The Route 53 team operates all DNS services, which gives it a unique view across AWS. That perspective allows the team to lead cross-organization work aimed at removing operational obstacles, improving delivery pipelines, and addressing bottlenecks that affect the wider AWS environment. Engineers on the team spend time digging into root causes, automating repetitive tasks, and raising the quality bar for customers.

The wider AWS organization is described as diverse and inclusive, with a strong emphasis on curiosity, connection, and bold ideas. Amazon says it supports employee-led and company-sponsored affinity groups, and that these help create stronger and more collaborative teams. The company also highlights mentorship, knowledge sharing, and career growth as part of its culture, along with a commitment to work-life harmony and flexibility.

What you need

  • Experience writing scripts, building tooling, and creating automation for large-scale computing environments.
  • Systems administration experience on Linux or Windows.
  • Experience developing or working with automation, testing, or monitoring frameworks.
  • Ability to use scripting or programming languages such as Python, Java, Perl, PHP, Ruby, Bash, Shell, or similar tools.
  • Experience with cloud computing technologies is desirable.
  • Experience in networking and troubleshooting is desirable.
  • Experience automating routine operational tasks is desirable.
  • A mindset suited to solving complex problems and rethinking how systems and processes should work.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with large-scale infrastructure.
  • Willingness to learn, collaborate, and contribute to a team that values coaching and shared growth.

Additional context

Amazon says it welcomes applicants with diverse and non-traditional career paths, and encourages people to apply even if they do not meet every preferred qualification listed. The company states that hiring decisions are based on experience and skills, and that it is committed to equal opportunity and non-discrimination.

If you need support during the hiring process, including help with interviews or onboarding, Amazon says workplace accommodations are available. The posting also directs candidates to the company’s privacy notice for information about how candidate data is collected, used, and transferred.

The role is listed for London, UK, within AWS EMEA SARL (UK Branch).
