This role sits within DeepMind’s Science and Strategic Initiatives unit and is centered on Science Automation, with a particular emphasis on lab automation for material science and life sciences. The position is designed for someone who can help accelerate scientific discovery by increasing the pace and volume of experimental results, while also supporting entirely new forms of scientific work. The successful candidate will partner with researchers, multidisciplinary internal teams, and external collaborators to turn ambitious scientific goals into practical outcomes and to help bring research advances into the world.

The broader environment is one of a global AI research organization focused on using advanced technology for public benefit and scientific discovery. The team works across multiple domains and offers opportunities to learn from highly interdisciplinary colleagues while contributing to work that aims to solve difficult global challenges. The role may also involve contributing to projects and operating processes that extend beyond the immediate Science Automation remit and into the wider Science and Strategic Initiatives unit.

What you will do

  • Lead complex programs from start to finish, using structured delivery methods such as agile planning tools, risk logs, and budget tracking to keep work aligned with goals.
  • Convert high-level strategic direction into practical execution plans, including clear milestones, deliverables, and dependencies that teams can act on.
  • Work with leadership and partners to turn research outputs into tangible impact, such as products, demonstrations, or partnership opportunities that have commercial, societal, or reputational value.
  • Identify risks and issues early, propose solutions, monitor progress, and keep technical documentation current so that delivery stays on track.
  • Spot technical dependencies and other requirements proactively so that teams can plan effectively and avoid delays.
  • Coach team members, strengthen collaboration, improve team ways of working, and help individuals grow and perform at a high level.
  • Build strong relationships across researchers, engineering, computational biology, product, and external partner groups to keep complex work moving forward.
  • Contribute to broader initiatives and process improvements across the Science and Strategic Initiatives unit, not just the immediate program area.

What the role requires

  • A bachelor’s degree in a technical subject, or equivalent practical experience gained in the field.
  • Five or more years working in program management.
  • Five or more years managing work across multiple functions or teams.
  • Experience developing deep working relationships with outside partners.
  • Experience overseeing external vendors.
  • Relevant background in robotics, automation, materials labs, wet labs, or systems engineering.
  • Strong technical fluency, including an understanding of how AI fits into lab automation and research that involves the lab in the loop.
  • The ability to influence stakeholders across disciplines and explain sophisticated technical ideas in a way that senior leaders can quickly understand.
  • A track record of improving processes, workflows, and governance to make research work more efficient.
  • Strategic thinking that supports the management of important external products and partnerships without slowing the pace of research.
  • English proficiency, as the company says English is required for all roles unless the posting explicitly says otherwise.

What makes this opportunity compelling

  • You will be helping to speed up scientific discovery through better experimental throughput and new scientific capabilities.
  • You will work at the intersection of AI, automation, material science, and life sciences.
  • You will collaborate with researchers and external partners on work that can move from the lab into real-world use.
  • You will be part of a global organization that highlights interdisciplinary teamwork, learning opportunities, and varied career paths.
  • The employer states that it is committed to equal opportunity, affirmative action, and a workplace culture where people feel they belong.
  • If you need workplace adjustments during the hiring process, the company provides a way to request accommodation.
