Research Engineer, Quantum Computing, DeepMind Overview

Company Name Google
Job Role Research Engineer, Quantum Computing, DeepMind
Qualifications Bachelor’s
Category IT Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location London

This role sits within Google DeepMind’s science-oriented engineering group and focuses on advancing the company’s Quantum Computing Initiative. The position is designed for an engineer who can move fluidly between research and implementation, helping turn ideas at the boundary of quantum computing and machine learning into working systems. The team works in a highly interdisciplinary setting and collaborates with experts across quantum computer science, mathematics, computational chemistry, physics, and machine learning.

The broader environment at Google for research-focused software engineers emphasizes close connection to research while still delivering practical impact. Engineers are expected to help set up large-scale experiments, prototype new ideas quickly, and contribute to work that can be deployed broadly. The company describes this as a setting where research and engineering are tightly linked, with opportunities to contribute to scientific discovery and to publish and collaborate with external research communities.

What you will do

  • Own complex research and engineering work from start to finish, including the implementation and scaling of machine learning solutions at the intersection of quantum computing and machine learning.
  • Work on both traditional ML approaches and agent-based systems as part of the research and engineering effort.
  • Translate ideas from classical and quantum algorithms into reliable, maintainable code that can support the team’s research goals.
  • Make thoughtful trade-offs between delivery speed, runtime efficiency, simplicity of design, and long-term sustainability of the codebase.
  • Serve as a bridge between research and engineering by helping the two sides communicate effectively and work together smoothly.
  • Promote readable, well-structured code and encourage strong software engineering habits across the team.
  • Create and maintain clear design documents that help explain technical decisions and implementation plans.

What the team and role are about

The role is part of a science team working on quantum computing-related research within Google DeepMind. The organization describes itself as an interdisciplinary AI lab focused on using advanced technology for broad public benefit, scientific progress, and responsible innovation. The work environment is collaborative and global, with a strong emphasis on safety, ethics, and high-impact research.

As a research engineer in this group, you are expected to contribute not just as a coder, but as someone who can help shape how research ideas become practical systems. The position is especially suited to someone who is motivated by the possibilities of AI for science and who enjoys working across multiple technical disciplines.

What you need

  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, physics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, or a closely related subject, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Five or more years of experience in machine learning, engineering, and software development, with strong use of Python.
  • Hands-on experience with data structures or algorithms, gained in academic or industry settings.
  • A PhD in a relevant scientific or computational discipline is desirable.
  • Experience with agentic AI and modern machine learning methods such as diffusion models, transformers, agentic tools, and large language models is desirable.
  • Knowledge of quantum computing concepts is desirable.
