This role sits within Armâs software engineering organization and focuses on the intersection of processor architecture, language runtimes, and compiler technology. The team is looking for someone who is curious, adaptable, and eager to work on how modern languages can make the best use of Arm architecture features. The work involves studying existing, new, and proposed architectural extensions, then determining how they can be applied effectively across a range of runtime and compiler technologies. The position also involves close collaboration with Arm architects, runtime engineers, and open-source communities to help shape future capabilities and improve real-world language implementations.
What you will do
- Review current and proposed Arm architecture features and identify where they can deliver value in language runtimes and compilers.
- Work with architecture specialists to refine ideas and, where suitable, help improve proposals for future features.
- Take responsibility for specific technical investigations and drive them forward with appropriate support.
- Partner with colleagues across Arm to improve the architecture and make sure it is used effectively in practice.
- Contribute to open-source projects and engage with the communities around them.
- Produce written material such as internal documentation and public-facing blog posts to explain findings and share technical insight.
- Develop tools and automation that make the analysis and investigation work more efficient.
What the team works on
You would be joining the wider CE-SW Runtimes group, whose mission is to strengthen support for modern programming languages on Arm architecture. The teamâs scope includes technologies such as Java, JavaScript, Python, Rust, WebAssembly, and related ecosystems. The role is highly collaborative and involves working not only with the immediate team, but also with other parts of Arm and with external open-source contributors.
Skills and experience needed
- A flexible, analytical mindset with a strong inclination toward problem solving and learning.
- Hands-on experience with language runtimes, compilers, or similar systems software.
- Strong coding ability in at least one of C, C++, or Rust.
- Understanding of computer architecture and microarchitecture concepts such as cache behavior and CPU pipelines, ideally with exposure to AArch64.
Helpful additional experience
- Practical knowledge of one or more of Java, JavaScript, Python, Rust, or WebAssembly.
- Experience writing assembly or doing low-level AArch64 development.
- Experience using Linux performance analysis tools and tuning system-level performance.
- Familiarity with build systems and continuous integration workflows.
- Previous contributions to open-source software.
