This role sits within the Building Engineering team and focuses on electrical engineering for rail-related building services work. The position is aimed at a senior professional who can contribute to technical design, support project delivery, and help expand the team’s electrical capability across rail programmes at local, national, and international level. The work involves close collaboration with colleagues in the UK and across the wider organisation, as well as direct support for major clients such as Network Rail and regional transport organisations.
The role is based in Birmingham, with an additional location in Nottingham. The posting does not describe remote or hybrid working arrangements.
What you will do
- Take a leading role in electrical engineering design for building services work on rail projects.
- Support the delivery of projects from technical design through to implementation and completion.
- Help develop and strengthen the team’s electrical engineering capability across a range of rail programmes.
- Work with colleagues across the UK and internationally as part of a wider building engineering network.
- Produce clear, coordinated electrical engineering solutions for important rail clients, including Network Rail and regional transport bodies.
- Use Microsoft and Autodesk digital tools to support design and project delivery.
- Contribute ideas for new digital methods or workflows where existing tools do not fully meet project requirements.
- Communicate with clients and internal stakeholders to keep work moving, manage risks, and track key milestones.
- Share knowledge with colleagues and contribute to ongoing improvement across the team.
- Help maintain a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive working environment.
- Deliver electrical designs that are compliant, technically robust, and suitable for the built environment.
What the employer is looking for
- Chartered Engineer status, or active progress toward chartership through IET or CIBSE.
- Strong experience in electrical engineering design.
- Experience delivering multidisciplinary design projects in the UK within a consultancy environment.
- Previous rail electrical design experience, including familiarity with rail-specific design stages and the standards used by major UK rail clients.
- Experience with assurance, systems engineering, or verification processes used on UK rail projects.
- A track record of producing electrical designs that are both compliant and technically sound.
- The ability to work effectively in a senior capacity, balancing technical delivery with client and stakeholder communication.
- Confidence using digital design tools, especially Microsoft and Autodesk software.
- A collaborative approach, with a willingness to support others and contribute to team learning.
