This role is for a senior software engineer focused on AI tooling for Armâs software teams in Cambridge. The position is aimed at someone who enjoys solving unclear engineering problems, building dependable tools, and helping software engineers use AI safely, effectively, and at scale. The work centers on turning AI prototypes into reliable internal products that improve productivity without reducing quality or engineering discipline.
What you will do
- Design, build, test, and maintain AI- and LLM-based tools that help software engineers work more productively while still protecting quality, safety, and good engineering standards.
- Develop production-grade software across command-line tools, APIs, backend services, user-facing applications, and CI-integrated workflows.
- Use strong architecture, automated testing, documentation, observability, and maintainable code practices to make the tools robust and supportable.
- Connect tooling to engineering data sources such as logs, test results, failure reports, source code, build metadata, and CI outputs so the information produced is traceable and useful for engineering decisions.
- Help design and evaluate LLM-based systems by identifying where they may fail, creating realistic test cases, measuring output quality, and improving prompts, pipelines, and application logic using evidence.
- Work with senior engineers, technical leads, and partner teams to understand how people actually work, clarify requirements, discuss trade-offs, and support adoption of AI tooling.
- Review code, collaborate closely with teammates, and provide practical mentoring on the responsible and effective use of AI-enabled development tools.
- Take ownership of scoped technical problems with limited direction, making thoughtful design decisions and applying strong software engineering practices to AI-enabled products.
- Contribute to Armâs wider effort to improve engineering efficiency, software quality, and developer productivity as AI-supported working methods expand across engineering teams.
What the team is looking for
- Strong Python software engineering experience, including the ability to design, implement, test, debug, and maintain reliable systems.
- Good engineering judgement, with the ability to weigh trade-offs, create maintainable solutions, work through ambiguity, and choose appropriate development practices instead of only producing fast prototypes.
- Practical experience with LLMs or applied AI/prompt engineering, including awareness of model limitations, hallucination risks, data sensitivity issues, and the need for evaluation and guardrails.
- Clear communication and teamwork skills, including the ability to explain technical choices, review other peopleâs work, and help engineers use AI tools safely and productively.
- Comfort with ambiguous engineering challenges and the ability to turn them into reliable, well-tested tools.
- Ability to work with partner teams to understand workflows and quality expectations.
- Capability to work with minimal guidance on well-scoped technical tasks while contributing through peer review, advice, and communication with closely related teams.
Helpful additional experience
- Experience improving developer productivity through workflow-integrated tools such as CLI utilities, APIs, backend services, web interfaces, CI integrations, test infrastructure, or engineering automation.
- Experience working with engineering data and signals such as logs, source code, test output, CI results, build metadata, failure reports, or software quality metrics.
- Hands-on DevOps experience with AWS, Kubernetes, CloudBees Jenkins, GitHub, or similar platforms.
Working style and team environment
The role sits within the Fast Models AI Enablement team, where the focus is on exploring and pushing the limits of agentic workflows and finding the best practical ways to use AI in engineering. The team aims to bring effective AI tooling into broader use across Armâs engineering organization.
