Senior Performance Tools Engineer Overview
| Company Name | ARM |
| Job Role | Senior Performance Tools Engineer |
| Qualifications | Not Specified |
| Category | IT Jobs |
| Job Type | Full Time |
| Location | Cambridge |
This role sits within Armâs software engineering organization and focuses on building and improving Telemetry, Armâs open-source reference tooling for performance analysis. The work is centered on helping engineers apply Armâs performance methodologies across compute subsystems such as CPUs, interconnects, memory systems, and related components. The team works closely with architects across Arm IP groups to convert performance methods into practical tools, and the output supports Armâs internal performance specialists, external partners, and the wider open-source ecosystem.
What you will do
- Develop and extend the Telemetry toolset so that developers can apply performance methodologies on Arm platforms and act on the signals those tools surface.
- Partner with architects and analysis teams to turn findings and technical needs into new features, test cases, example material, and documentation.
- Use synthetic workloads and targeted microbenchmarks to validate performance methodologies, including occasional use of Arm assembly when that is the best way to exercise a scenario.
- Work alongside kernel and firmware engineers to ensure the required performance-measurement building blocks are available and usable, including PMUs and perf_event-style interfaces.
What the team is looking for
- Strong Python skills for building tooling, processing data, and automating workflows.
- Comfort working in C and C++ so you can reason about low-level performance systems across kernel and user space.
- Good debugging ability and a structured approach to solving technical problems.
- Experience delivering tools aimed at developers and improving them through iteration with real users.
- Ability to work across disciplines and translate performance analysis into practical engineering outcomes.
- Desirable experience with SQL, for example SQLite, for trace analysis and querying.
- Desirable familiarity with front-end web technologies such as TypeScript or JavaScript, HTML, and WebSocket for static web applications.
- Helpful exposure to hardware architecture topics including pipelines, caches, MMUs, interconnects, timers, and multithreading.
- Helpful open-source contribution history and experience with modern CI/CD workflows.
- Useful understanding of operating system fundamentals such as processes, threads, locks, and virtual memory, especially in relation to application performance.
- Helpful knowledge of assembly basics and Arm architecture concepts.
