Principal/Senior Principal Engineer Arm ARM Overview

Company Name ARM
Job Role Principal/Senior Principal Engineer Arm ARM
Qualifications Bachelor’s
Category IT Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location Cambridge

This senior engineering position sits within Arm’s Architecture Technology Group and focuses on the Arm Architecture Reference Manual, a flagship specification that plays a central role in the wider Arm ecosystem. The role is intended for someone who can contribute at a high level to the manual’s ongoing development, quality, and delivery, while also helping shape the tools and processes that support it. It combines architecture, engineering, documentation, and tooling, and offers the chance to influence work that has impact across Arm and its partner network.

Working alongside the Technical Director for the Arm ARM, you will help own important technical aspects of the production pipeline, including the systems used to develop, validate, quality-check, and publish the manual. The position also involves improving how the manual is created and delivered, supporting broader transformation efforts, and helping establish a modern, scalable specification framework that fits Arm’s future architecture strategy.

What you will do

  • Help define and deliver the long-term direction for the Arm ARM, with a focus on accuracy, accessibility, consistency, and overall quality.
  • Take the lead on cross-functional initiatives involving architects, engineering teams, and external partners to improve the product and its standards.
  • Assess and sign off plans for introducing new architecture content and new quality-assurance scenarios.
  • Drive the maintenance approach for the manual, working closely with architects and engineers on content restructuring and continuous quality improvement.
  • Encourage the use of supporting tools, validation systems, and digital publishing methods.
  • Guide and mentor technical contributors, helping build stronger architecture knowledge across the teams involved.
  • Act as a senior technical authority within ATG and help move forward key internal change programmes.
  • Contribute to the creation of a modern, scalable specification framework aligned with Arm’s future architecture plans.
  • Support the goal of making the Arm ARM widely recognised for being clear, correct, and easy to use.

What you need

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or equivalent experience gained in practice.
  • A strong grasp of Arm architecture and ISA fundamentals, plus the ability to quickly understand new architectural developments.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership, including experience working with external partners and in customer-facing situations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across different teams and stakeholders.
  • Experience with authorship workflows, specification platforms, or the creation of high-quality technical documentation would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of standard software engineering practices would be helpful.
  • Practical experience with Unix scripting, Python, Git, or Gerrit would be beneficial.
  • Exposure to ASL, Arm machine-readable specifications, or modelling work would also be useful.
