Bloombergâs Engineering and CTO organization is looking for a Senior ML Research Engineer to join its Artificial Intelligence group in London. The team is made up of more than 400 AI practitioners who build highly sought-after products and features, often requiring new technical ideas and novel approaches. The group is investing heavily in AI to improve search, discovery, and workflow experiences using methods such as transformers, gradient boosted decision trees, large language models, and dense vector databases.
This role sits within a business that aims to support a transparent and efficient financial marketplace. Bloombergâs technology makes news, research, financial data, and analytics across more than 35 million financial instruments searchable, discoverable, and actionable for users in global capital markets. The company has been developing AI applications since 2009 to solve these problems with high accuracy and low latency, and it uses AI to process and organize the growing volume of structured and unstructured information needed for better decision-making. These systems help uncover signals, generate analytics across all asset classes, and provide clarity when clients need it most.
What you will do
- Work alongside colleagues on production systems and contribute code that is written, tested, and maintained to production standards.
- Design, train, experiment with, and evaluate machine learning models, algorithms, and end-to-end solutions.
- Provide technical leadership by taking ownership of projects that involve multiple teams.
- Stay informed about the latest AI research and apply new findings to Bloombergâs models and methods where relevant.
- Represent Bloomberg in scientific and industry conferences, as well as in open-source communities.
- Share product and research outcomes through documentation, white papers, or publications in respected academic venues.
The work may include initiatives such as anomaly detection in bond time series data, dividend forecasting, gas emission estimation, and assessing the financial impact of controversies.
What the team is looking for
- Practical experience working on machine learning problems, with familiarity in classical machine learning, deep learning, and statistical modeling techniques.
- Either a PhD in machine learning, NLP, or a related area, or an MSc in computer science, machine learning, mathematics, statistics, engineering, or a similar discipline together with relevant professional experience.
- Strong capability in software engineering.
- Good understanding of core computer science concepts such as data structures and algorithms, plus a data-oriented approach to solving problems.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with engineering colleagues and non-engineering partners.
- A publication history in leading conferences or journals is a strong advantage.
- Applicants should note that the stated years of experience are only a guide, and Bloomberg will consider people who can show they have the skills needed for the role.
