Job Type Full Time

Arm’s Userspace Performance group is seeking an experienced software performance analysis engineer to take on a leadership role guiding a small team. The position focuses on improving the speed and efficiency of software running on Arm systems used around the world. The work involves solving difficult performance problems, understanding complex software stacks, and helping shape future improvements in both software and hardware.

What you will do

  • Lead a compact team of engineers working on software performance and optimisation.
  • Keep the team’s work organised, well planned, and delivered on schedule.
  • Manage direct reports and support their development as people and engineers.
  • Encourage ongoing learning so the team continues to build capability and expertise.
  • Investigate large and complex codebases to improve performance across different areas.
  • Work with internal teams, external partners, and open-source communities to solve performance-related problems.
  • Help define the strategy for identifying bottlenecks and deciding which issues should be examined next.
  • Document analysis work clearly so knowledge is retained and shared across the team and beyond.
  • Produce written reports and presentations for stakeholders and for future reference when similar issues arise.
  • Work across a variety of environments, including the latest hardware, FPGA platforms, and software models of upcoming designs.
  • Collaborate closely with tooling specialists to develop better ways of finding the root causes of performance issues.
  • Engage with partner organisations to help them understand and address the performance challenges they are seeing.
  • Contribute technical insight that can inform hardware design choices for future products.

About the team

You will join a group of software engineers who are motivated by the opportunity to influence the future of computing. The team enjoys tackling hard technical problems and focuses on improving the performance of software running on Arm platforms. Their work often involves very large software stacks with complicated interactions, and they regularly collaborate with other Arm teams to gain insight and develop better solutions.

The team also works with external companies to help them diagnose performance issues in their own workloads. In addition to solving immediate problems, the group aims to feed lessons back into future hardware design so that later generations of Arm technology perform even better.

Strong interpersonal skills are important in this role. Arm is looking for someone with excellent English communication skills who can write clear documentation, explain technical findings well, and mentor less experienced engineers.

What Arm is looking for

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
  • At least two years of management experience, along with a history of delivering high-quality work on time.
  • The ability to communicate complex technical ideas clearly and effectively.
  • Very strong C and C++ programming skills.
  • Hands-on experience using profiling and tracing tools to find performance bottlenecks in large applications.
  • Excellent spoken and written English.
  • Confidence in writing technical documentation and supporting junior engineers.

Helpful additional experience

  • A genuine interest in coaching others and helping the team grow.
  • Understanding of how demanding software systems such as web servers, databases, mobile applications, and similar workloads behave from a performance standpoint.
  • Knowledge of operating system fundamentals, including processes, threads, locks, and virtual memory, and how these affect application performance.
  • Awareness of system architecture topics such as pipelines, caches, MMUs, interconnects, timers, and multithreading.
  • Understanding of compiler optimisation techniques.
  • Ability to interpret generated assembly code.
  • Familiarity with open-source project workflows and contribution models.
  • Knowledge of Arm architecture and the tools used with it.
