Job Type Full Time
Location Cambridge

This is a rare opening for a CPU ASIC Design Engineer to join a highly influential semiconductor organisation at its main UK design site in Cambridge. The role sits within an elite engineering group working on the technologies that power future CPUs, GPUs, ultra-low-power IoT products, and advanced wearable devices used by large numbers of people worldwide. It is a hands-on processor design position focused on shaping high-performance, low-power CPU technology from the earliest architectural ideas through to silicon delivery.

The position is based in Cambridge, England, and requires five days per week on site. It offers the chance to work at the centre of CPU innovation alongside experienced architects and design specialists in an environment known for technically demanding, high-impact engineering work.

What you will do

  • Partner with CPU modelling teams to investigate and compare different approaches for achieving high-performance designs.
  • Help define and develop CPU microarchitecture, starting from early architectural concepts and carrying the work through to detailed implementation.
  • Take responsibility for RTL design and ongoing refinement, ensuring the implementation meets targets for power, performance, timing, and area.
  • Contribute to performance verification work so that the silicon outcome aligns with the intended architectural goals.
  • Work closely with physical design engineers and other specialist teams to produce designs that are dependable and ready for manufacturing.
  • Play a part in technical decisions that influence the performance and efficiency of the next generation of processors.

What the employer is looking for

  • Strong knowledge of microprocessor architecture and the fundamental principles behind CPU design.
  • Practical experience with Verilog and/or VHDL.
  • Good understanding of logic design, timing closure, and techniques for reducing power consumption.
  • Familiarity with low-power microarchitecture approaches.
  • Awareness of the design trade-offs involved in building high-performance CPUs.
  • Experience using scripting languages such as Perl or Python.
  • The ability to work through complex architectural and implementation challenges in a collaborative setting.

What is offered

  • A competitive base salary.
  • Restricted stock units as part of the package.
  • An annual bonus.
  • The opportunity to work on world-class CPU technology within a globally respected engineering organisation.
  • Exposure to advanced, cutting-edge processor development projects.
  • Visa sponsorship for engineers already located in the UK.
  • Additional visa support and relocation assistance where required.
