An established medical and optical instrumentation business is looking for a Sustainability Engineer to support the continued development, upkeep, and long-term viability of complex electronic products. The role is centered on extending the life of existing hardware platforms, improving them where needed, and working across the product lifecycle in a regulated, product-led environment.
This position is based in Berkshire, England and is described as being within a friendly team. It offers a practical, hands-on engineering remit with responsibility for keeping products supportable from production through to end of life.
What you will do
- Support existing electronic products throughout their lifecycle, including the period from manufacture all the way to end of life.
- Diagnose and fix hardware problems that arise during manufacturing, through supplier issues, or from products already in the field.
- Manage the impact of component obsolescence by finding alternative parts, arranging second sourcing, and updating designs where required.
- Make engineering changes to existing products, including updates to schematics, PCB revisions, and bill of materials changes.
- Assist with compliance activities, verification work, and the maintenance of technical documentation for regulated products.
- Liaise with suppliers, manufacturers, and internal colleagues to keep products available and functioning as intended.
- Work closely with manufacturing, quality, and design teams to support ongoing product development and lifecycle continuity.
- Take ownership of technical issues affecting established hardware platforms and contribute practical solutions that preserve product performance and availability.
What the employer is looking for
- A background in electronic hardware engineering or a sustainability engineering discipline.
- Experience with schematic capture, PCB design, or making design modifications to existing hardware.
- Knowledge of component lifecycle management and methods for reducing risk from obsolescence.
- Strong hands-on troubleshooting skills, including the ability to investigate faults and determine root causes.
- Experience working in regulated environments or settings where quality and compliance are important.
- A degree in Electronic Engineering or a similar relevant field.
- The ability to communicate and coordinate effectively with suppliers, manufacturers, and internal stakeholders.
- Someone comfortable working on mature products and supporting their continued operation and improvement.
Additional context
The role sits within a business that develops medical and optical instrumentation, so the work is tied to products where reliability, compliance, and careful change control matter. The position is not a new-product-only design role; instead, it focuses on sustaining and improving existing hardware, resolving issues, and ensuring continuity of supply and support.
